Tips to keep your iPhone with longer battery life

Smartphones are an indispensable tool for getting work done and staying in touch with the world. You can check emails, send texts, search the web, download and transmit documents, contact people via Skype or instant message, or even for entertaining purpose like gaming and facebooking.

Unfortunately, all those duties and their associated apps take a huge toll on your phone's battery life. In some cases, a new, fully charged phone might not make it through the day unless it's topped off with extra power supply.

Fortunately, you can squeeze a little more life out of your smartphone's battery by disabling some of the always-on apps that run in the background by using (ironically) other task manager apps. Some of these are on your phone; others are available as freeware or through your mobile service provider. Here are a few options:

iPhones

Unlike Android phones, there are no task killers for iPhones. However, there are ways you can up your battery life on Apple products:

Start with the iPhone's settings that can boost battery life:

  • Screen brightnessGo to Settings > Brightness and lower the default screen brightness. You can also set Auto-Brightness to adjust the screen brightness based on current lighting conditions (Settings > Brightness > Auto-Brightness > On).
  • Wi-Fi. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and set Wi-Fi to Off. Opt for Airplane Mode (Settings > Airplane Mode) in low- or no-coverage areas.
  • Bluetooth. Go to Settings > General > Bluetooth and set Bluetooth to Off.
  • Location services. Disable the applications that you don't need to track for location. Disable them by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
  • Push notifications. Applications that require constant updates, such as instant messaging, can devour battery power. Go to Settings > Notifications and set Notifications to Off to those application that you don't need for push notification.
  • Photo Stream. Photo stream feature will automatically upload the pictures you taken to iCloud when you are connected to wifi. This will cause slowness to internet surfing and reduce your battery life. Go to Settings > Photos & Camera to off the photo stream feature. Disabling this feature will cause the photo remove from your iCloud.
  • Email fetch. The more frequently email or other data is fetched, the quicker your battery will drain. From the Home screen, choose Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data, then tap Manually. Or, increase the fetch interval toHourly (Fetch New Data > Hourly) if you still prefer periodic updates.
  • Auto-check email accounts. Save power by checking fewer accounts at Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Choose an email account, and set Account to Off, or Delete Account.
  • Music EQ. Using an equalizer on song playback can decrease battery life. Go to Settings > Music > EQ and tap Off.
  • Siri. Siri is a great personal assistant for your iPhone. However, it burn a lot of battery power to function well. Go to Settings > General > Siri to disable Siri if you don't really need her.
